To look at him you’d never imagine this former Irish boxer with a record of 147knockouts to 11 could sing but Chicago Sun-Times theater critic Hedy Weisscalls him “velvet-voiced” in her review of his performance as Pat in BrendanBehan’s “The Hostage”.

Atrained fighter, his rugged looks belie the gentle giant who can bring anaudience to tears with his characterizations and just as quickly startle themwith his fierceness. He’s been acclaimed in roles in shows from Shakespeare’srebellious Hotspur to Dickens’ Bob Cratchit. He’s adept at styles from classicMelodrama to modern realism and has won several awards for his portrayalsincluding Chicago’s coveted Jefferson Citation for “Freedom of theCity”/Ensemble, the Irish International Festival Award, After Dark and thePatrick Awards.

He’strained with Chris O’Neill at the famed Abbey and Gate theaters in Dublin andat the renowned Piven Workshop whose alumni include Jeremy Piven, RosannaArquette, Joan and John Cusack, and Lara Flynn Boyle.

He’sappeared in Films and TV; and numerous commercials including Dubliner Cheese,Chevrolet and Killian’s Red.

Wellrounded in life, he’s a licensed electrician, general contractor; firearmsrated; a skier and holds a real estate license. Mr. McDonagh, also, “can belchon cue”!
